CHAPTER 10: ESCAPE

“Huff, huff...”

Liam exhaled strongly as he entered the temple, out of breath. Fortunately, the air inside the temple kept the water out. The stone structure was huge, almost one hundred meters tall and at least half as wide. Even the behemoths outside would seem small in comparison.

After catching his breath, Liam stood up, the huge entrance archway above him.

[Congratulations! You have discovered a Ruin! You are the 6th in your Tutorial Zone to discover one. You are the 58th human in general to find one.]

Liam narrowed his eyes as he heard the System’s voice. Everything that involved this treacherous System was dangerous in some way, shape, or form.

“System, what is a Ruin?”

His question was only met with silence. Ever since it first answered his questions before he was teleported to the Tutorial Zone, the System had remained silent over any others, as if stating that it no longer had to respond. Left to fend for himself, Liam cursed before starting to walk deeper into the temple. Fortunately, his spear was still with him, although he’d almost lost it on the way. He had used it to split the water in front of him and dive down faster.

Liam’s wet steps echoed in the great chamber. The temple seemed to consist of only a single corridor, with blue light radiating from its end. It was a simple, clearly artificial design. The only things of note were the carvings on the inner walls of weapons and warriors, monsters, and battles, so vivid that they seemed like they would jump out of the walls and start moving about at any second. The cold, still air clung to him like a cloak, giving the place an ancient feeling. The fatigue he felt seemed to drift away the longer he remained in the light, even the hunger and thirst he felt being replaced by a mysterious sense of fullness.

[You have received XP!]

Liam widened his eyes. Was this why the monsters fighting outside were so eager to remain in the water?

The feeling of danger was once again creeping its way over him as he walked. Once he stopped, the feeling subsided. Walking further would intensify it.

‘Whatever danger there is in here, it’s only deeper into the corridor.’

Liam sat down on the ground. He decided to take the opportunity to rest. He was trapped in here as long as the two monsters outside remained alive. Even if they were both dead, the salamander’s poison had already merged into the water. If he tried to leave, he would lose all of his skin and superficial muscles, at the very least.

For a few moments, all was calm. It was the first time Liam had felt a bit of reprieve from the outside world, so full of danger and death. He took the opportunity to think. He mourned for all the dead and those who would die in the future.

‘What have I done?’

In spite of his dream, he had murdered. He had killed Vena and a few of his followers, as well as a great amount of other, non-sentient lifeforms.
